Keeping it in the family - Loughborough Echo
Most retired people move home to be nearer friends and family, according to a new survey of the over 60s, suggesting that the appeal of a retirement 'enclave' is waning.
Asked about the factors driving a decision to move, friends and family came top of the list, followed by the desire for a better location, the struggle to cope with an existing property, the need to raise capital and lastly security concerns - a priority with only four per cent of those questioned.
"It appears a growing number of over 60s want to retain independence by choosing not to move into sheltered housing and instead are thinking about selling their homes in order to be nearer to loved ones. However many encounter finanical barriers to choosing a suitable property, preventing them from moving home," comments Mark Neal of Lifetime Lease specialists Homewise, who conducted the survey.
